This blog sucks

Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to start a blog and remove all doubt. Just over a year ago, I compiled a list of links to commentary on an interview given by Bill Gates to Steven Levy, where Mr. Gates got, well, flustered. The Mac community, myself included, pounced all over it and even came a bit "unhinged."

Yes, I went too far and in hindsight, said some particularly ridiculous things, and the only thing that is sad is that it's taken me over a year to acknowledge it.

I've always felt that Bill Gates is Peter Keating and Steve Jobs is Howard Roark, but now that Gates has proven himself to be Peter Keating, I feel little pleasure in pointing it out. The only regret I have about all of this is that I didn't do a detailed comparison of those characters earlier.

Well for the record, I no longer feel that way and I only regret having ever intended to make the comparison. There is a scene in the Fountainhead where Peter Keating breaks down and tells Howard Roark how much he hates him. That is the scene which I ineffectively compared to Bill Gates' "moment". In the Fountainhead, Howard Roark is the real thing and Peter Keating is little more than a poser. Bill Gates is no poser, and the fact that I suggested otherwise says more about me than it does about him.

Gates is a driven, technological visionary who "got" the potential of software early and built what nobody can dispute is the most important technology company of our time.

Jobs is cultural visionary, a man way ahead of his time who, has slowed down just enough to let everyone else catch up, so that he can take advantage of new realities emerging in technology and entertainment.

Bill and Steve are both Fountainheads, just of different types. They are the left brain and right brain of the computer industry, the classic and romantic, the yin and yan.

I am an artist and blogger who hadn't considered the repercussions of posting and ill-conceived rant.

Bad Vista Review, Mac Ad

Apple hosts another Mac ad this time it's in the form of a web ad and they're attacking Microsoft's Vista OS. Well actually I think Vista attacks itself, but watch a see for yourself.

Antigravitas - I'm a Mac now; thin and good looking, with a sense of style

Antigravitas - I'm a Mac now; thin and good looking, with a sense of style:
"Well, after being a PC (including the dumpy, funny-looking part) for years, I've made the switch. I'm a Mac now. The thing is, it didn't work quite like I hoped. I'm not suddenly young nor slim nor hip. I didn't sprout great hair. And, yes, my fashion sense still sucks. But I've got this cool looking computer with some really nice features!"

Windows XP Upgrade

This is a GREAT read. Here is a look at how someone upgraded their Windows machine from Vista to XP. I know what you are thinking, but how can you upgrade FROM Vista to XP...well here's your chance to find out. A lot of tongue and cheek here, but under the satire is some good reasons not to ever install Vista. Thanks go out to our friends at 9 to 5 Mac for this gem.

iPhone Parodies

Here are some excellent iPhone parody's. These are not as squeaky clean as the original Apple iPhone ads, so kids stay away from these links. A must for any adult Apple fan! Thank you Steve for finding these gems for us.

PC World - Vista Biggest 2007 Disappointment

Boy PC World magazine really seems to be eating it's own these day. Heres another ditty that is sure to make you smile. Topping their listing of the The 15 Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007, Microsoft's Vista OS tops the list. Ouch! Yes the article gives Vista some props for its snappy new Areo interface, parental controls, and searching, but it takes huge dings for driver incompatibilities, large hardware requirements and the fact more people are switching back to XP then ever. A must read for anyone thinking of loading Vista... or those who are just glad they bought a Mac!

Whats in a Name?

ComputerWorld blogger Seth Weintraub does a great job looking at the way Apple names its products. It's not an iPod D-2903, just an iPod. There's no different levels of "iMac-ness", just a 17, 20 and 24" inch models...done. No hard to define codes or numbers, just iPhone, iPod Nano, Airport, Macbook and MacBook Pro. If you want a better/faster Airport, you get the Airport Extreme, want a smaller one, get the Airport Express. Gone are the days with the Performa 5215/75 and PowerMac 8100/80. What the hell is that mess? I'll wait while you Google it. Who has the time to figure out the maze of numbers in a Dell or Sony Name? What about your Cell Phone? I know that Nokia has plenty of models to choose from, but really? Anyone remember the Acura Legend? Acura got mad and dropped name in the US because they felt their branding was at stake. Many owners when asked what they drive would answer "A Legend" instead of "An Acura Legend." So what, in my mind its one and the same, but Acura felt differently and I think missed the ball on that great brand name.

When asked what type of Apple mp3 player or laptop or phone you have--its always "An iPod, MacBook Pro or iPhone" not "An Apple iPod or Apple MacBook Pro or Apple iPhone." And certinaly not "a X1234-09, or N85 or WRT-54G." It's simple, it's sleek and it's easy to remember.

I don't think other companies get it. Read Seths excellent article here.
